NERVOUS SYSTEM REGULATION | My Journey Back to Calm

This time last year, I developed a twitch in my eye.
Not the fleeting kind that comes and goes when you’re tired — this was different. It was constant, relentless, and lasted for three whole months.

I went to the opticians for a check-up, worried there might be something serious going on. They found nothing physically wrong but suggested it was likely stress-related. If it didn’t improve, they mentioned I might need Botox in my eyelid to stop it from twitching.

Next, I went to my GP. The first thing she said was, “This is all to do with your nervous system.”

Two months in, tired and frustrated, I decided something had to change.

I started small.
✨ I set an alarm to wake up earlier than the rest of the house and began meditating again — just 10 or 20 minutes a day.
✨ I planned my week, blocking out time to exercise, move, and bring back my regular yoga practice.
✨ I talked to my daughters (then 3 and 5) about how important good sleep is — for them and for me.
✨ I booked a massage and a reflexology session.

Little by little, I began to feel more like myself again — less wired, less stuck in fight-or-flight mode.

People often assume that because I’m a yoga teacher, I must always be calm. The truth is, I’m not. I’m an anxious person by nature. I spend a lot of time living off adrenaline and cortisol — and that’s exactly why I practice yoga, and why I teach it.

These tools are what bring me back to balance.

After three months, my eye twitch disappeared overnight. I kept up my daily routine for another six months, and life slowly found its rhythm again.

But here we are, almost a year later. It’s November, and once again, I can feel the familiar signs of stress creeping back in.

So today, I rolled out my mat.
I moved, I breathed, and I felt something shift.

I’m committing to this practice again — not because it’s easy, but because it’s necessary.

Regulating our nervous systems takes consistency, self-compassion, and awareness. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about noticing when we’re off-balance and choosing to come home to ourselves.

Are you feeling the burnout as we near the end of the year?
Maybe today, like me, is the day you take back control — one breath, one movement, one small act of care at a time. 🌿
